My personal list of what to pack for the hospital :
· Medical Paperwork · Insurance Card · Photo Id · Hospital Registration Forms-if you have not already turned them in. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PRE-REGISTERING with the hospital if you can. It makes checking into the hospital on delivery day WAY easier. The last thing you want to be doing is sitting in the lobby while having contractions and trying to fill out registration forms. Do it before hand and you will be so glad that you did . · Viacord Cord blood banking kit
Toiletries-pack travel sizes · Toothbrush & Toothpaste · Lip Balm (you will need this as your lips tend to get dry during labor) · Moisturizer or lotion · Nursing bra and nursing pads (I recommend packing about 4-6 pads) · Hairbrush, hair bands, clips, etc (you will want something to pull your hair out of your face during labor as you may find the littlest things annoying, including hair in your face) · Makeup, shampoo, conditioner, styling tools, face wash, body wash, deodorant, etc… · The usual travel necessities…. (call ahead and see if the hospital has a blow dryer in the room)
Clothing · Slippers and an appropriate robe (make sure its one that covers completely as you may be walking the halls and there are other people visiting as well). You may even want to venture down to the cafeteria or garden. You can bring along some of your own nursing gowns (the hospital may allow you to wear your own gowns after you deliver) · Socks- bring a couple pairs as your feet tend to get freezing cold during labor · Maternity underwear · Loose comfy clothes to wear home (around your 5 months size) · 2 pillows and 2 clean brightly colored hard to loose pillow cases (more if desired or if dad is staying)
Personal Care Items · Prescription Medicines-make sure you tell the hospital staff what you have, if any · Breath Mints or suckers (ask doctor first though if ok to eat during labor) · Glasses/contacts and case and enough solution for 3-5 days · Magazines or book or gameboy or laptop if desired · Pen and notepad · Cell phone and charger · Plenty of change for snack/drink machines (it could be a LONG night) and the cafeteria is generally closed at night · Camera and batteries (and plenty of film if you are not using a digital camera)
Baby items · Baby car seat (you cannot leave the hospital without it) · Sweater or light jacket (you may not actually need this but its good to have just in case it’s a cool day · Hat and booties or socks · Swaddle blanket and receiving blanket for ride home · Newborn outfit for going home (the baby will most likely just wear the hospital onesie the whole time. They usually don’t let you put her in “civilian” clothes for the Stay for security reasons) · Newborn outfit for hospital photo (the baby will probably only wear this outfit for a few minutes) · Diaper bag with a change of clothes, extra socks and a few diapers & wipes
Misc. Stuff That You Will Thank Me for Telling You to Bring: · A couple empty shopping bags (for all the extra stuff they will give you at the hospital) · A couple of empty zip lock bags (for keeping the little stuff together in your room, I never travel without these!) · A pocket folder (for all the paperwork they are going to give you at the hospital) · A couple of bags of Dads favorite candy or snacks (make sure you ask the · doctor before mom eats ANYTHING during labor though) · A list of people to call and a pen/highlighter to mark off whom you have called (believe me, you will forget so it’s best to just have a list and check off as you go). Actually, it’s easiest to establish a phone tree before hand, that way all you have to do is contact one person and then they can call the next on the tree and so on. · Anything else that you feel you simply cannot live without (within hospital policy of course)
